Education is one of the tools that can be used to promote world peace. For you to appreciate the truthfulness of this statement, you have to understand the influential role that is played by education in the formation of people’s minds. You come to realize that, indeed, education plays a very big role in the formation of people’s attitudes and mindsets, especially in today’s world where kids are taken to school at very young ages. To put it bluntly, what takes place in our schools is not just ‘education’, but also quite a bit of ‘indoctrination’. And that is something we can take advantage of, to promote world peace.
For many years now, education has been viewed as a tool to be used in preparing people for roles in the labor market. That is why, for instance, companies like Walmart (whose HR portal is MyWalmart) find it so easy to induct new workers into their labor forces: because the education system has already inducted the potential workers into the corporate way of thinking. So the new people at companies like Walmart only need to be shown how to carry out their specific tasks, and they are good to go. In that sense, we come to the conclusion that education has been effective as a tool for labor market preparation.
We are not saying that we should stop using education as tool for preparing people for roles in the labor market. What we are saying is that, over and above that, education should also be used as a tool to prepare people for good citizenship. Here, we are making reference to ‘good citizenship’ in the broadest sense of the term: where people are meant to be prepared to be good citizens of their nations, good citizens of their localities, good citizens within their neighborhoods and, of course, good citizens of the world. We should aspire to get to the point of using education to mold the kids to be future good citizens of the world. We should aspire to get to that point of viewing the entire world as one super-state in which we are all citizens. Then we will be on course towards the attainment of world peace.
